Technology

Technology encourages innovation, creativity and problem solving.

Students learn to use ICT and other technologies effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school.

The capability involves students in learning to make the most of the technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve.

The study of Technology aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure that, individually and collaboratively, students:

  • are creative, innovative and enterprising when using traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies, and understand how technologies have developed over time
  • effectively and responsibly select and manipulate appropriate technologies, resources, materials, data, systems, tools and equipment when designing and creating products, services, environments and digital solutions
  • critique and evaluate technologies processes to identify and create solutions to a range of problems or opportunities
  • investigate, design, plan, manage, create, produce and evaluate technology solutions
  • engage confidently with technologies and make informed, ethical and sustainable decisions about technologies for preferred futures including personal health and wellbeing, recreation, everyday life, the world of work and enterprise, and the environment.
  • To develop students’ computer skills ranging from the fundamental to the skills required in making use of a networked, internet-enabled environment.
  • To assist students in their ongoing skill development using common software applications and packages as they progress through their secondary education.
  • Develop skills in using a variety of ICT hardware, equipment and software effectively, efficiently and responsibly.
  • To appreciate the importance of ergonomics in constructing a safe ICT environment.
  • To encourage students to develop essential information literacy skills through use of the internet, email and web 2.0 applications.

Students will develop skills by:

  • posing problems and identifying needs and areas for improvement
  • gathering information about the needs and improvements, and devising the best path to take towards finding a solution
  • developing and using design and technology skills, knowledge and processes to create new and/or improved products and/or systems
  • using tools, equipment, materials/ingredients and systems components safely and creatively to make quality products and/or systems
  • understanding that design, creativity and technology lead to innovation
  • evaluating design and technology processes and the resulting products and systems.
