Performing Arts

The Performing Arts program is dedicated to cultivating informed, creative, and confident performers. Through exploration, development of practices, creation, and presentation, students build a strong foundation in theatre and performance practices. Our approach encourages an understanding of social and cultural contexts while fostering a genuine enjoyment of the creative process.

In our program, we aim for students to:

  • Develop a positive self-image
  • Create and appreciate performances
  • Develop organisational and collaborative skills
  • Enhance public performance skills and manipulate elements of technology and stagecraft
  • Enjoy personal satisfaction through aspiring to excellence in artistic achievement

Year 7

Year 7 Music introduces students to the fundamental elements of music through practical and creative learning. Students develop aural skills, explore notation, digital composition, and performance.

Year 8

Year 8 Drama focuses on playmaking, performance and stagecraft. The subject builds confidence, collaboration and practical performance skills.

Year 9

Students may select one or more semester based electives from:

  • Drama

Year 10

Students may select one or more semester based electives from:

  • Music
  • Drama
  • Theatre Studies

Years 11 and 12

Students may select elective VCE studies from the following:

  • VCE Theatre Studies
  • VCE VET Music (Performance)

Extra–Curricula activities in the Performing Arts

Students at Mary MacKillop College can enjoy a wide variety of extra Performing arts ensembles on top of the classes if they wish. These include: Choirs, Bands and private instrument lessons.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts is committed to providing a program to develop skills which enable expression and communication through experience, response and interpretation of visual forms.

Visual Arts aims to provide programs which encourage students:

  • to develop the intellectual and expressive potential of the student through aural, spatial, kinaesthetic, interpersonal and visual experiences
  • to explore how different social and cultural groups engage in and convey meaning through their art
  • to develop skills and techniques through exploration and development of ideas using a broad range of materials and media
  • to gain confidence in art criticism and aesthetics through describing, analysing, interpreting and evaluating their own and other art works

The opportunity to study the Visual Arts is available from Years 7 to 12.

Years 7 and 8

Students complete compulsory studies in the Visual Arts; Art and Visual Communication Design.

Year 9

Students may select one or more semester-based electives from:

  • Art
  • Media Arts (Photography)
  • Visual Communication Design

Year 10

Students may select one or more semester-based electives from:

  • Art
  • Media
  • Visual Communication Design

Years 11 and 12

Students may select one or more VCE elective studies from:

  • VCE Art Creative Practice
  • VCE Media
  • VCE Visual Communication Design
